D.A.F.

D.A.F. (D) are historically seen as the founders of the EBM-genre. When their debut “Kebabtraume” came out in 1981, they called it themselves “Elektronische Körpermusik” and a new musicgenre was born. Since then this duo (Gabi Delgado and Robert Görl) were like an unmissable chain from the electronic scene with “Alles ist gut” and “Gold und Liebe” being one of the most important albums ever and being cited by almost every musician as being an influence.

An interview with Robert Görl can be found below!

This year’s BIMfest will have DAF on top of its bill. Every music fan will surely know the importance they had, and still have!, on today’s electronic music scene. So it was with great delight that we had a chat with Robert Görl on what once was and what will be.

HELLO GUYS. WELL, DAF ARE AN INSTITUTION BUT DO YOU FEEL YOURSELVES AS AN INSTITUTION?

Well, a bit, but in a non-binding way - we always like to give people ideas, but we leave it up to them what they will do with it.
Gabi and me we are free spirits and in this way we have a progress with people.

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING YOU'RE PART OF DIE NEUE DEUTSCHE WELLE.
DID YOU EVER FEEL PART OF IT, AS ALL BY ALL IT CREATED GENIUS ALBUMS BUT
IT HAS BEEN A GENRE THAT'S BEEN MILKED TO DEATH.

We never feel Part of anything.
Within the NEUE DEUTSCHE WELLE we did our very own thing.
We even felt a bit uncomfortably seeing this enforced conformity.

TALKING ABOUT COMMERCIALISM. YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE BANDS WHO ARE A HOUSEHOLD NAME BUT THE BEAUTY IS : YOU NEVER HAD TO MAKE ANY COMPROMISES FOR THAT.

Probably this is why we are not played all day long in the Radio. We created a new kind of Song formula. We did not like the common Song writing style, which is still a must to be played commercially on the radio.
To boring for us really - And also not free enough. But of course,
Exceptions prove the rule :)

YOU SEEM TO READ EVERYWHERE THAT YOU ARE THE FIRST ELECTRONIC BODY MUSIC
IN HISTORY, I'LL LET YOU COMMENT THAT YOURSELF.

Probably because of our music style we created 30 years ago.
When you listen to EBM Bands nowadays, they often sound like us. We take that as a compliment.
And they also liked our clothes Style i guess: Black!

HOW DID YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION TO COME UP WITH SUCH A SOUND?

We said this many times! our aim was to do something very original.
We worked quite hard for that.
We liked the Fusion between dirty sequenced electronic Sound and real acustic drums - like a real Man Maschine thing.

Man (People) are not perfect, they sweat, and sometimes they breathe twice in a
second instead of one time - this aspect we always liked in our structures.

SOMETIMES I DO WONDER IF BANDS CAN CREATE SUCH UNIQUE THINGS THESE DAYS.
WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR SOUND IN WUPPERTAL, HOW WERE THE REACTIONS TO
THAT UNIQUE SOUND?

We actually started in Düsseldorf!! Ok, Gabi lived in Wuppertal at that time. but him and me we met in Düsseldorf and started everything there.
The truth is, People liked us from the very first moment. all our first Live Shows were sold out. but the Record Companies did not like us!

They told us "this is no music what we are doing".
Unique things these days? - some say everything is already done?
I think when the time is right and you do something which causes really
Love and hate for you, then you are there.

NOW IT'S LOGIC, BUT WAS IT EASY TO CONVINCE AN AUDIENCE AS AFTER ALL YOUR SOUND WAS COMPLETELY NEW!

In the late 70`s when the Punk Movement came.
People were ready for something very new. People were bored with old schemes.
This was a great chance for us. I am aware, this kind of chance is not always around.
At the moment free music Spirit has to fight hard against a very well-adjusted music scene. That’s the way it goes.

YOU ARE WORKING 30 YEARS TOGETHER, I GUESS ROBERTO AND GABI MUST BE THE BEST FRIENDS EVER.

No, not really. Sometimes we are great friends - and sometimes we don’t like each other.

SOME SAY YOU CAN BE SEEN AS THE GODFATHERS FROM THE ELECTROSCENE. IS THAT A SCENE YOU FOLLOW YOURSELF?

We have followers in different scenes. Also in the House Music - some say we did one of the first House Records - they refer to our Album "First Step to Heaven" in the mid 80`s.
And it is also said, that we did spread the seeds for Techno. In the 90`s I released 4 strictly Techno Albums under my own name.

I GUESS I AM RIGHT STATING YOU'RE CHILDREN OF THE 80'S.
WHAT DOES THE 80'S MEAN TO YOU?

The 80`s gave the world a big change in music - electronic music made their way to the top. Everything felt amazing because of this new atmosphere which was in the air.
For us it was our big DAF Fight time, and i made also my first Solo Album together with Annie Lennox.

IN 2008 YOU DECIDED TO REFORM DAF. WHY EXACTLY, DID YOU DECIDE THAT?

First of all, Gabi and me we had a good feeling to do it again.
Second, we thought it is a great moment: A 30 Years jubilee for DAF.
Third, there was some money for us too.

I ASK THIS TO EVERYBODY : WHAT'S YOUR FAVE RECORD OF ALL TIME AND PLEASE STATE WHY....

"Hey Jude" from the Beatles and "Sex Machine" from James Brown
Why?? - you always have early favourites, don’t you?

YOU SOON WILL BE ON BIMFEST. WHAT CAN THE FANS EXPECT?

We will play our greatest hits, and some not so famous ones.

I LEAVE THE LAST WORDS TO YOU.....

See you at BIM FEST - we are looking forward to it!
